I was out for morning walk this morning. It's the first day of New Year. I met many new faces this morning. I guess it's either a New Year Resolution or it's due to Public Holiday. I saw 3 ladies who look determined with complete exercise gears. One of the ladies, caught my attention. She was donned with pink top to toe. Even her hijab, water bottle, sling bag and headphone is in pink colours.😅 So adorable. 🎧🧕
Every year, millions of people around the world make New Year resolutions, hoping to improve their lives, habits, or skills. However, not all of them manage to stick to their plans and achieve their goals. In fact, according to a study by the University of Scranton, only 8% of people who make New Year resolutions actually keep them. Why is that? And what are some of the most common New Year resolutions that never come true? Let’s find out.
Why Do People Fail to Keep Their Resolutions?
There are many reasons why people fail to keep their resolutions, but some of the most common ones are:
Lack of specificity: Many people make vague or unrealistic resolutions, such as “I want to lose weight” or “I want to be happier”. These resolutions are hard to measure and track, and they do not provide a clear direction or motivation. A better way to make resolutions is to be specific and realistic, such as “I want to lose 10 pounds by June” or “I want to practice gratitude every day”.
Lack of planning: Many people do not have a concrete plan or strategy to achieve their resolutions. They rely on their willpower or motivation, which can fluctuate or fade over time. A better way to make resolutions is to have a plan that breaks down the goal into smaller, manageable steps, and to schedule them into your daily or weekly routine. For example, if you want to read more books, you can set a goal of reading one chapter per day, and allocate a specific time and place for reading.
Lack of support: Many people try to achieve their resolutions alone, without seeking help or feedback from others. This can make them feel isolated or discouraged, especially when they face challenges or setbacks. A better way to make resolutions is to have a support system that can provide encouragement, accountability, or advice. For example, if you want to quit smoking, you can join a support group, or ask a friend or family member to be your quit buddy.
What Are Some of the Most Common New Year Resolutions That Never Come True?
According to a survey by YouGov, some of the most common New Year resolutions that people make in 2023 are:
Exercise more (50%)
Eat healthier (49%)
Save money (48%)
Lose weight (41%)
Reduce stress (38%)
Learn a new skill (34%)
Travel more (30%)
Read more books (28%)
Spend more time with family and friends (25%)
Quit smoking (16%)
However, these resolutions are also some of the most likely to be broken or forgotten, as they require a lot of effort, commitment, and discipline. According to a study by Strava, a social network for athletes, the most common day to give up on New Year resolutions is January 19. This means that most people do not even last three weeks before they abandon their goals.
How to Make Your New Year Resolutions Come True?
If you want to make your New Year resolutions come true, here are some tips that can help you:
1. Choose one or two resolutions that are meaningful and important to you: Do not make too many resolutions, or resolutions that you do not really care about. Focus on the ones that can make a positive difference in your life, and that align with your values and passions.
2. Write down your resolutions and review them regularly: Writing down your resolutions can help you clarify your intentions and motivations, and remind you of your progress and achievements. Review your resolutions at least once a week, and celebrate your small wins and milestones.
3. Be flexible and adaptable: Do not be too rigid or perfectionist about your resolutions. Life is unpredictable and dynamic, and you may encounter unexpected situations or obstacles that can affect your plans. Be ready to adjust your resolutions according to your circumstances, and do not give up if you make a mistake or miss a deadline. Learn from your failures and keep moving forward.
4.Reward yourself: Achieving your resolutions can be hard work, and you deserve to reward yourself for your efforts and accomplishments. Treat yourself to something that makes you happy or proud, such as a nice meal, a new outfit, or a relaxing massage. Rewards can also motivate you to keep going and stay on track.
I, personally has failed with my resolution for 4 years in a row, which is to stay healthy and fit. 😌
This year, I decided to enter New Year without much thought. I have no resolution or plan. I am just going to live my life as it is without much expectations. 😅
Happy New Year 2024 everyone!
