Busting the Painful Truth Behind Misunderstood Physiotherapy

It's Just a TikTok Stretch, Right?

When Ignoring That Aches-Here-and-There Could Cost You More Than You Think

You'd be surprised how many of us brush off chronic pain like it's just "aging gracefully" or a "minor annoyance." But when does pain stop being a phase and start being a sign? And what if that physiotherapy session you've been ghosting isn’t just another fancy stretch you can learn on TikTok?

Some of us maybe just me have that misconception of physiotherapy is just a body stretch exercise which can be refer in TikTok video. Here the common myths about physiotherapy :

1. Physiotherapy is just for athletes or sports injuries.

Nope. It’s for everyone! from office workers with stiff necks to seniors managing arthritis. It’s about restoring movement and function, not just post-match recovery.

2. It’s just a fancy massage.

While some sessions may include soft tissue work, physiotherapy is a science-backed treatment plan. Think manual therapy, mobility training, posture correction, electrotherapy, and more.

3. I can just do the exercises I saw online.

DIY might work for banana bread, but not for your spine. Physiotherapists tailor exercises to your specific condition, body mechanics, and recovery goals. Doing the wrong move can make things worse.

4. No pain, no gain.

Actually, no pain is the goal. Physiotherapy aims to reduce pain, not cause it. Discomfort during rehab is normal, but sharp or persistent pain is a red flag—not a badge of honor.

5. You only need it after surgery or injury.

Preventive physiotherapy is a thing! It helps improve posture, mobility, and strength, reducing your risk of injury in the first place.

6. One session and I’m good to go.

Healing takes time. Physiotherapy is a process, not a magic wand. Consistency and commitment are key to long-term results.

7. It’s just stretching! I can do that on TikTok.

Physiotherapy isn’t about trendy stretches. It’s about understanding your body’s mechanics and retraining it to move better. TikTok can’t diagnose your muscle imbalances or nerve issues.

8. You need a doctor’s referral to see a physiotherapist.

In many places, including Malaysia, you can book a session directly. No referral needed! just your willingness to take your pain seriously.

Gaisss!!!! Physiotherapists have a whole toolbox of techniques. Far beyond the basic stretches you might scroll past on TikTok. Here’s a breakdown of the most common and effective treatment methods they use to manage pain, restore mobility, and improve overall function:

Manual Therapy

  • Joint mobilization & manipulation: Hands-on techniques to improve joint movement and reduce stiffness.
  • Soft tissue release: Targets tight muscles and fascia to relieve tension and improve circulation.

Therapeutic Exercise

  • Strengthening & flexibility routines: Tailored to your condition to rebuild muscle and restore range of motion.
  • Postural correction & balance training: Especially helpful for chronic pain or fall prevention.

Electrotherapy

  • TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation): Sends mild electrical pulses to block pain signals.
  • NMES (Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation): Helps retrain weak or injured muscles.

Hydrotherapy

  • Aquatic exercises: Performed in warm water to reduce joint stress while improving strength and mobility.

Heat & Cold Therapy

  • Hot packs: Increase blood flow and relax muscles.
  • Cold packs: Reduce inflammation and numb acute pain.

Ultrasound Therapy

  • Uses sound waves to promote deep tissue healing and often used for tendonitis or muscle strains.

Shockwave Therapy

  • High-energy sound waves stimulate healing in chronic conditions like plantar fasciitis or tennis elbow.

Kinesiology Taping

  • Elastic tape applied to support muscles, reduce swelling, and improve movement patterns.

Neurological Rehabilitation

  • For conditions like stroke or Parkinson’s, focusing on retraining movement, coordination, and balance.

Dry Needling

  • Involves inserting fine needles into trigger points to release muscle knots and reduce pain.

Each technique is chosen based on your specific condition, goals, and how your body responds. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s more like a personalized recovery roadmap.

Yes gais! the place is clean not like the google review, I have clarified with the owner and apparently the person who left such review have been experiencing morning sinus way before entering the place and blame the place as dusty. I would say her review didn't do the justice to this awesome place and good owner. Her unfair review totally effect my decision too which I feel bad that I trusted that review and took me freaking 3 month plus to enter into the physiotherapy journey to manage my long suffering body pain.

Moral of the story , be wary before leaving any bad review because minus one star can change many people's life. Don't live your life with a small heart. Always be someone with big heart!

Cosmoderm Luminous A Retinol Review

In general, most people are advised to start using retinol in their mid-20s. Why do we need retinol for our skin? Well, this is because collagen and elastin production starts to slow down. Adding retinol into our skincare routine at age of 25 to 30 is the perfect time to slow down the ageing process. So, what is retinol that people are hyping about? In short, retinol is a topical product containing a vitamin A derivative. Technically speaking a type of retinoid which works to increase collagen production. It helps to treat acne, and blackheads and is also ideal to improve skincare texture such as minimising fine lines, and wrinkles and brightening dull skin. Personally, I am a beginner in adding Retinol into my skincare routine. At the age of 47 years old. I guess, am afraid to start one because I read many side effects if use it wrong.  What is the side effect if you use retinol wrong?  Retinols can increase your skin's sensitivity to sunlight. So, it is advisable to apply th...
