This year’s first Raya felt a little different. Instead of my usual celebration at my last sister's house, All of us gathered at my sister’s new house for the big day. Potluck mode activated! I decided to contribute two things: a tray of dark chocolate black cookies and a big wok of fried noodles.
Now, let me confess… I’m not a fan of yellow noodles. Rarely eat them. But my family? Big fans. So, I woke up at 5 a.m. (yes, 5 a.m.!) to fry noodles for them. Problem is… my bujang house doesn’t even have a proper big wok. Ended up cooking in batches.
Batch 1: Bitter.
Batch 2: Bitter again.
Batch 3: I gave up. Packed the raw noodles and thought, “Fry yourself la!” Hahaha… my evil side wanted to throw away the failed batches, but the angel in me won. I carried everything over with the mindset and accept any criticism gracefully.
At my sister’s house, I braced myself for the first taste test. She said, “Noodles taste fine. Not bitter. Just a bit salty. Edible la.”
Hmm… either my taste buds are weird, or theirs are. Hahaha! At least I didn’t throw everything into the dustbin. Small victory, kan?
And oh, the highlight of the day and meeting my Mom’s youngest brother after 8 or 10 years (I can't recall but its a long time la). His first comment when he saw me?
“Whoaaa!!! Rina maintain je.”
Maintain? If only he saw me 4 months earlier, when I was at my heaviest, stuck in the obese zone for years. Now, I’ve managed to lose 7.8kg and slowly working my way down from overweight to normal weight. Still hiding from too many humans, but at least Raya gave me a little boost of confidence.
So yeah… cookies, noodles, family reunion, and a surprise compliment. My Raya story this year 2026 imperfect, but memorable.
