I honestly thought today was going to be just another routine dental check-up.
You know... the usual once-a-year appointment. A quick scaling, a few X-rays, the dentist saying, "Everything looks good. See you next year."
Instead...
I walked out of the clinic with a referral to a root canal specialist.
I still can't believe it.
The dentist showed me my X-ray and explained that there is an infection underneath one of my crowned teeth. Suddenly everything made sense.
For the past few months, I would occasionally notice a small swelling on my gum. Sometimes there was even a little pus. It would disappear after a while, so I kept telling myself...
"It's probably nothing."
I never imagined it could be an infection hiding underneath a tooth that had already undergone a root canal years ago.
The dentist explained that the infection needs to be treated, and she's referring me to an endodontist...a root canal specialist. Depending on the specialist's assessment, they may be able to drill a small access hole through my existing crown and retreat the tooth instead of replacing the crown.
The moment I heard all this...
My heart just sank.
Gaiss...
I'm scared.
Like... really scared.
I know this may sound irrational, but after reading news reports about people dying during dental procedures, my mind immediately went to the worst possible place.
"What if something happens to me?"
I know those stories are rare.
I know thousands of people undergo root canal treatments every day.
But anxiety doesn't always listen to logic.
It just whispers every terrifying possibility into your head.
Part of me wants to cancel the appointment and pretend none of this is happening.
But another part of me knows that ignoring an active infection isn't the answer either. The infection won't magically disappear just because I'm afraid.
I've already been struggling with my health lately, and hearing the word "infection" only made me worry even more. My mind keeps racing with all the "what ifs."
I know not every health issue is caused by a dental infection, but I also know leaving an infection untreated isn't good for the body. So as frightening as this journey feels, I know I need to face it.
Still...
I'm terrified.
Tonight, my heart feels so heavy.
If you've ever had a root canal retreatment, an infection under a crown, or you've been treated by an endodontist...
Please leave me a comment.
Tell me how it went.
Tell me if you were scared too.
Right now, I think I just need to hear from people who've been there before.
And if you're reading this...
Please keep me in your prayers.
I'm praying that the specialist can save my tooth, that everything goes smoothly, and that one day I'll look back at this blog post and smile because I made it through one of the things that frightened me the most.
Sometimes life reminds us that even a simple yearly dental check-up can uncover something we never expected.
Take care of your teeth, don't ignore swelling or pus on your gums, and please don't skip your dental check-ups.
You never know what they might catch before it becomes something much bigger.
